Default Carbon or Steel

I do prefer steel on a long distance bike but I really cannot explain why. It used to be because of reliability issues, crash worthiness, etc, but as the years have gone by and I had a couple of carbon bikes that lasted a really long time and held up really well, I am finding fewer and fewer reasons to find any DIS-advantages with carbon other than price.
While I do still prefer steel or ti (have a whole seperate savings account dedicated to saving for a Pegoretti frame) I am curious as to other's reasons why.

I purchased a steel frame for two reasons. The first was price, and the second was that I needed custom geometry. I bought a Marinoni Piuma, made with Columbus Spirit Tubing. Custom geometry, custom paint, built up into a 17# bike, with the frame and fork costing about $1000. The finished bike handles great, is super comfortable, and (in my opinion) is a joy to behold. How could I possibly beat that with a carbon frame?
